Abbey

She/they

Oh hello there! I’m Abbey, one half of the duo behind this wonderful venture. I have been creating since I was a child, with a unique focus on creating using recycled material. My mom would often comment how she thought I would become a sculpture artist growing up based off of wacky creations I thought of as a kid. I grew up developing my affinity for spotting secondhand treasures by going to estate sales, rummage sales, antique stores and thrift stores with my mom. While I may have traded in my Elmers for hot glue, my goal of repurposing and creating art that makes a statement has remained the same. Nature, my favorite musicians, and little treasures found in a secondhand store all inspire me to create art that is bold, colorful, and impactful. One of the things I love most about creating is how art can be tangible forms of feelings and emotions. Art is joy. Art is pain. Art is growth. Art is resistance. How wonderful that something I created with my own two hands can hold so much power! Back in 2016 I created my first wreath, and have come up with some truly one of a kind designs. Since then, I’ve created a set design for a local theater production, a floral archway for a wedding, a matching bouquet and boutonniere for a friend’s elopement in Vegas, and countless specialized wreaths for family and friends. Most recently, I’ve enjoyed hand sewing and working with felt which opens up a whole new world of color, design, and skill.

Haley

She/they

Hello! I am Haley, the other half of the Scott by Design duo. I have had art at the center of my life for as long as I can remember; often enjoying the process of creating as much as seeing the final product. Though acrylic paint tends to be my favorite medium, my insatiable ADHD leads me to experiment with multiple mediums and refuse to settle on a singular way of creating. In school, I have taken courses in drawing, painting, photography, and computer art - each of which built on my understanding of composition, color, subject matter, and ultimately what brings me joy to create. As a human who has been worried about the Earth since my 8th grade homeroom teacher showed the class Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth", I have felt a personal responsibility to find ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle in my life, which also extends to my art. I have squirreled away all manners of materials to work into my creations- from shredded paper bits to thrifted jewelry. Through my courses in Gender & Women Studies and LGBT Studies at UW-Madison, I unearthed new depths of their identity as a human and an artist, inspired to use my creativity not just as enjoyment but as self-discovery and resistance. All these pieces of my journey as a person and an artist can be seen in my work, as I now aim to create colorful, multi-media pieces that illustrate the inner workings of my brain outwardly.
