Inspired by the HBO Max queer-centric series ‘Heated Rivalry’, this 8x8” canvas features a quote from the last episode of the first season. In the scene, Shane’s father has accidentally just walked in on Shane and Ilya kissing, discovering Shane’s long-held secret that he is gay. After his dad hastily exits, Shane is panicking at the thought of coming out to his parents when Ilya attempts to comfort him with the phrase, “Yes, it’s scary. But you are brave.” As I watched this scene, I was struck by this quote and felt it had a more broadly applicable meaning beyond that which was shared in the series. It is often scary to do new things, and even scarier to do new things that are difficult. But the mere fact that something scares you should not be enough to deter you from facing your battles head on. It’s ok if you are still a little scared while you are fighting those battles! Just remember that you are braver than you believe and CAN survive/overcome scary situations.
Acrylic paints and markers were used to achieve the final product. The colors of this canvas are also inspired by the strong lighting used throughout the series: mysterious, moody blues and revealing, bright, change-bringing oranges and yellows.
This canvas has been sprayed with a UV-resistant sealant to extend the durability of the design.
